Luke Darcy: Value of loyalty
unrg:
With Greater Western Sydney ready to pounce, loyalty should have greater currency than money.
This is such baloney. Next to Dustin Martin, Tom Scully is the most talented three-seasons-or-less player in the league at the moment. If he plays a full career he’ll have another 12-14 years of earning potential, but that can be a big “if.” He’s already been out for half this season with injuries, and I don’t think it’s inconceivable that he could have a career ending injury at 26. I don’t think anyone would expect the Melbourne Football Club to have loyalty to him then.
If Greater Western Sydney is offering him a $5 million five year contract and Melbourne can’t match it (and without the concessions made to GWS it’s a given that they can’t), then he should go and convert his talent to cash money. Basically you gotta get taking while the going’s hot, because you never know when things could change.
As far as I can see it, all this talk of unilateral player-club loyalty is a device used by a few older players still uncomfortable with the idea of Australian rules football (and its power base) expanding outside of Victoria. I can understand that: I would be dirty if GWS picked up Dustin Martin from the Tigers, but I would never blame him.
The mention and commendation of Grant is just a bullshit extention of congratulating himself. Although ten points off Dustin Martin for having a douchebag tattoo.
